The United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety to visit Uzbekistan
Mr. Jean Todt the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety to visit Uzbekistan on 17-19 September to meet with Government officials of Uzbekistan, private sector, civil society organizations and youth.
During the visit Mr. Jean Todt will deliver commitment of the UN to support the Government in improving road safety outcomes in Uzbekistan, encourage Uzbekistan to accede to and successfully implement seven core UN Road Safety Conventions, present the UN Road Safety Trust Fund, aimed at supporting Member States’ road safety efforts and consult private sector, industry association and civil society to identify the ways to enhance road safety.
Within his mandate Mr. Todt is helping to tackle a global development crisis, which takes lives of 1.35 million globally and leaves 50 million more seriously injured every year. A leading cause of death among children and youth, road traffic injuries results in significant social and economic consequences, costing most countries up to 5% of their GDP.
In his role as a Special Envoy, Mr. Todt travels to UN Member States and engages in high-level dialogue with stakeholders across the globe to mobilize sustained political commitment towards addressing road safety as well as encourage stronger action and adequate funding to the issue.
