Tashkent marks International Yoga Day
On 18 June, Tashkent’s Bunyodkor Stadium drew hundreds of yoga enthusiasts to celebrate International Yoga Day, marked in Uzbekistan and throughout the world for a third time.
The theme for the 2017 celebration is ‘Yoga for Health.’ The theme highlights the fact that yoga can contribute in a holistic way to achieving an equilibrium between mind and body. The UN believes that every spiritually and physically healthy man is able to contribute to the development of a sustainable future and live in harmony with nature.
Following welcome remarks by Indian Ambassador Vinod Kumar and Uzbek actress Lola Eltoyeva, around 300 participants immersed themselves in a yoga session that is traditionally held on this day and draws both yoga enthusiasts and newbies.
Yoga Day celebrations in Tashkent were organized by the Embassy of India in Uzbekistan and the Lal Bahadur Shastri Centre for Indian Culture with support from the UN Information Office.
International Yoga Day was established on 11 December 2014 through a UN General Assembly Resolution for the purpose of raising global awareness of the many benefits of this ancient, which brings harmony to man’s physical and spiritual state.
