UWED hosts annual Model UN Conference
Over 180 students from 15 Uzbek higher educational institutions participated in the twelfth Model UN Conference held at the University of World Economy and Diplomacy. Organised with support from the UN Information Office, the conference was opened by the UN Resident Coordinator in Uzbekistan Stefan Priesner and UWED Rector Abdumalik Jumanov.
Mr. Priesner spoke about the challenges the UN faces in its work and said that in spite of the many crises, military conflicts and problems the world body helps millions of people worldwide. Thanks to the UN, global poverty has been halved, millions of mothers enjoy safe childbirth, and people in natural disaster zones have been supported. He noted the high relevance of the interest the youth shows in the UN’s activities whose role in the improvement of people’s lives is of paramount importance.
In turn, Mr. Jumanov said that Model UN conferences are important in that they help aspiring diplomats to learn negotiating skills and expressed hope that they will make a significant contribution to global peace and prosperity in the future.
This time the conference participants simulated sessions of the Security Council, the General Assembly, the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and UNESCO. The themes were “Strengthening Coordination of Humanitarian Aid in Disaster Zones and Other Emergencies,” “Expansion of the Youth’s Rights and Opportunities through Access to Information, Communications, Technology and Media,” “Food Security and Nutrition in the Context of the Sustainable Development Goals”, and “Threats to Security in Central Asia and Prospects of Regional Cooperation.”
